A Hellgate puts your party and one enemy party in the same demon-filled instance. You clear mobs, the lava starts to rise, and sooner or later the two teams meet. The winners take the reward chest, and in lethal they also loot everything the losers wore. The 2v2 is where most small-scale players learn to fight, because a mistake costs one set and you learn something from it every time.
What changed since 2025
Older videos describe a different mode. These are the changes that matter, oldest first:
- Abyssal Depths update (June 2025): Hellgates open only from the Antiquarian's Den in each Royal City and Caerleon. Open-world entrances are gone and Hellgate Maps can no longer be used (they now salvage for 100% of their value). 10v10 was removed. Base loot and fame went up, loot no longer scales with Infamy, and the fame bonus from Infamy dropped from 50% to 20%. The winning team now heals and loses its debuffs after a victory, and the 2v2 Hell buff adds another 10% damage.
- Abyssal Depths Patch 1 and 2 (July 2025): a knocked-down player stays down for up to 10 minutes. Duels inside and Fame Shrines were removed. Lethal 2v2 gained more Antiquarian Standing, most other modes less.
- Realm Divided Patch 3 (January 2026): the healing debuff in 2v2 Hellgates rose from 30% to 35%.
- Radiant Wilds Patch 1 (May 2026): a 5v5 team that brings more than one healer gets extra Healing Sickness, the same rule the 5v5 Arena uses.
- Dragonfire Patch 3 (October 2026): lava now also cuts your defense against players by 50%. Full-stall comps that waited for the other team to melt in the lava lost their main plan.
